Weld-on barrel hinges beside a steel gate frame corner

How to Choose Gate Hinges: Questions Beyond the Advertised Weight Rating

A hinge listing may show a large weight rating, but that number is not enough to select hardware for a complete gate. The gate’s geometry, support arrangement and the conditions behind the rating matter too. Treat the product specification as a starting point for review, not a substitute for gate design.

Describe the gate before selecting the hinge

Record the leaf width and height, frame and infill arrangement, intended opening direction and proposed post or column connection. Give the fabricator the best available gate weight information, rather than estimating from appearance alone.

A wide gate places its weight farther from the hinge line than a narrower gate of the same weight. Hinge spacing and the support structure also influence the assembly. Selecting a hinge therefore requires more context than choosing the next advertised capacity above the gate weight.

Read the conditions behind the rating

Ask whether the quoted capacity refers to one hinge, a pair or an installed set. Check the permitted arrangement, installation requirements and any width or geometry limits stated by the manufacturer. If those details are not available, request clarification before ordering.

Do not assume a product titled with a particular load will suit every gate below that figure. Also confirm the dimensions, pin arrangement, lubrication or maintenance requirements, corrosion protection and whether the intended fixing method matches the project.

Check how the hinge meets the structure

For weld-on hardware, the hinge body, frame and post connection must be reviewed together. The required preparation, alignment and welding belong in the fabrication scope. For an existing concrete column, the connection detail needs its own assessment; buying a steel hinge does not establish a suitable anchorage.

Discuss the finished gaps and available adjustment. The completed gate needs to move through its intended travel, meet the latch or stop correctly and suit the finished ground levels.

Compare the actual product options

The PWS Store includes 12 × 80 mm weld-on barrel hinges and another barrel-style swing gate hinge option. Open the current listings and compare their specifications. These are product options to evaluate, not interchangeable recommendations for every gate.

If you are ordering a complete PWS gate, discuss the hardware as part of the package rather than selecting it separately without the design context. Explore PWS gate systems and share your entrance photos, opening size and preferred appearance.

Before you buy

Have the gate layout, weight information, supporting structure and manufacturer’s rating conditions reviewed together. If the answer to any of those is unclear, resolve it before fabrication. A well-defined hardware choice is easier to coordinate than a last-minute replacement after the gate is built.

For the overall driveway layout, compare sliding and swing gates. If the project calls for a custom steel swing gate, see the PWS BLACKBAY double swing gate as one example.
