Steel brackets and a CAD outline prepared for CNC plasma cutting

How to Prepare a Drawing for CNC Plasma Cutting: A Customer Checklist

A useful plasma cutting enquiry answers two questions: what shape needs to be cut, and what finished part do you expect to receive? A clear drawing can shorten the quotation conversation and reduce the chance of someone interpreting a sketch differently from you.

Start with material, thickness and quantity

State the material and grade if known, the thickness, and how many identical pieces you need. Say whether you are supplying the sheet or asking PWS to quote it. If several parts share one drawing, give each part a reference and quantity rather than leaving the operator to count outlines on the page.

Include the intended use. A decorative panel, mounting bracket and close-fitting machine component can have very different requirements even when their outlines look similar.

Make the scale unambiguous

Identify the drawing units and include an overall dimension that can be checked. A file that opens at the wrong scale can still look convincing on a screen. Do not assume a screenshot or photograph retains the scale of the original drawing.

Where available, provide the native cutting outline or an agreed DXF format together with a dimensioned PDF for reference. If you only have a sketch, say so. PWS design and 3D modelling support can be discussed as part of the preparation scope.

Separate cut geometry from notes

The cutting outline should clearly distinguish the outside profile, internal holes and slots. Dimension notes, centerlines and labels should not be confused with lines to cut. Check for gaps, duplicate geometry and unwanted construction lines before exporting. Torchmate’s CAD/CAM guidance explains why overlapping lines and hidden gaps can need correction before cutting.

Do not apply your own assumed kerf offset unless that has been agreed with the operator. Explain the finished dimensions you require and let the production setup be confirmed for the actual machine and material.

Identify features that need closer review

Mark holes that must accept a particular fastener, matching parts that must fit together, and edges that need additional finishing. Small holes and fine details may need a different process or a secondary operation. Plasma hole quality depends on the equipment and process; it should not be assumed from a drawing alone.

Send one complete enquiry

Use the PWS CNC Plasma Cutting service page to send the file, material, quantity and project notes. Mention any deburring, drilling, bending or delivery you need. The service product supports an approved order after the scope and quotation are agreed; it does not replace the drawing review.

Before production, confirm the accepted file revision and finished requirements in writing. That final check is often more valuable than another screenshot of the same part.
